Launch of European research into radiotherapy for cardiac arrhythmias

Launch of European research into radiotherapy for cardiac arrhythmias On June 15th and 16th, the STOPSTORM consortium coordinated by the UMC Utrecht with the IMIM and Hospital del Mar's participation, met virtually to discuss early project progress. The project, which officially started on May 1st, will begin researching the use of radiotherapy in treating cardiac arrhythmias. Patients who suffer from ventricular tachycardia (fibrillation of the ventricles) are often treated with medication and/or implantation of an ICD, a defibrillator that corrects a rapid heart rate with an electric shock. In cases of persistent arrhythmias that do not respond adequately to regular therapy, patients may undergo invasive catheter ablation.

New tool for studying one of the most basic elements in drug success

New tool for studying one of the most basic elements in drug success The results of the study, published in Nature Methods, may facilitate the development of new drugs related to diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer's. The new tool provides access to a large number of atomic-level simulations, the most basic, of the behaviour of a crucial element in almost all human physiological responses. This work is the result of a study by a consortium of international research centres led by scientists at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute, in collaboration with Pompeu Fabra University and the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland, and with the support of the Autonomous University of Barcelona.

New data mining tool to identify characteristics in patients with covid-19

New data mining tool to identify characteristics in patients with covid-19 This is a pioneering Data Analytics project in Spain, which will enable us to increase our knowledge of the evolution of COVID-19 and its interaction with patients with other pathologies based on the analysis of discharge reports. The initiative is the result of collaboration between Hospital del Mar, the technology company Bismart and Ferrer Laboratory and uses the artificial intelligence tool Bismart Folksonomy. In less than a month, a project has been launched with more than 34,000 hospital and emergency room discharges, 2,700 of which correspond to COVID-19 patients. This will allow an in-depth analysis of their evolution and the relationship of the infection with other basic pathologies.

Testing music therapy at home for patients who have suffered a stroke

Testing music therapy at home for patients who have suffered a stroke A joint study between Hospital del Mar, IDIBELL, the University of Helsinki and the Spanish National Research Council funded by La Marató de TV3 tries to analyze the effects of music therapy (musical learning) once patients have finished hospital rehabilitation and are in a chronic state of the disease. To do this, they designed a keyboard linked to a smart tablet that allows the participants of the study to do their exercises at home and learn gradually in an established manner. An earlier study of the same group shows that musical therapy, like other therapies, has similar effects in motor rehabilitation for patients who have suffered a stroke, having a strong impact in mood improvement and quality of life.

Living in a noisy area increases the risk of suffering a more serious stroke

Living in a noisy area increases the risk of suffering a more serious stroke A study by the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM), Hospital del Mar, ISGlobal, and Brown University, in the United States, has revealed that xposure to high levels of traffic noise increases the risk of suffering a more serious ischaemic stroke by 30%. Conversely, proximity to green areas has a beneficial effect and reduces the risk of a more serious stroke by 25%. The work, published in the journal Environmental Research, analysed data from nearly 3,000 patients treated at Hospital del Mar.

Paradigm shift in how bone fractures are avoided in HIV patients

Paradigm shift in how bone fractures are avoided in HIV patients A study by doctors and researchers at Hospital del Mar and the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute, in collaboration with Johns Hopkins University in the United States, reveals that osteoporosis problems in HIV sufferers are caused by infection and not antiretroviral treatment. The discovery modifies how the problem of bone fracture is addressed in these patients, leading the way to studies of new drugs that complement treatments for combatting the virus. The results have been obtained thanks to a bone quality measurement technique that applies a clinical protocol developed at Hospital del Mar and which several centres in other countries have already shown interest in.
